High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound technology to lift, tighten and tone the skin on your face and body.
Ultrasound waves are focused deep below the surface of the skin where it reaches the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS or muscle layer) to stimulate collagen and elastin production and the body’s own natural healing process, without harming the skin’s outer layer.
The result? Long-lasting firming and tightening of the skin after just one treatment, with no downtime.
HIFU Facelift
HIFU tones and tightens facial skin – essentially a facelift without surgery or downtime. HIFU targets the layers of the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift brows, lift sagging jowls and melt the fat on double chins to restore the jawline. HIFU can also lift sagging skin on your neck and décolletage.
HIFU Body Slimming Treatment
HIFU can treat and melt stubborn fat – perfect if you’re close to your ideal size but just couldn’t seem to tighten certain areas through diet and exercise.
HIFU is a non-surgical body slimming and sculpting treatment, not a weight loss solution. It targets and destroys fat cells without damaging surrounding tissues so you can reduce fat to achieve a slimmer and tighter figure.
5D HIFU vs Conventional HIFU
With the arrival of 5D HIFU at Visible Changes Adelaide, you can now benefit from effective skin tightening treatment that’s four times quicker than traditional HIFU treatments.
The HIPRO-V is able to penetrate deep into the subcutaneous layer and target heat energy to specific points below the surface of the skin, results are achieved more quickly and effectively.
5D HIFU | Conventional HIFU |
Active scanning treatment using sweeping movements, allowing for targeted treatment and scan times that are four times quicker than conventional treatments. | Line by line treatment with no active feedback.
Poor targeting and limited ability to customise treatment. |
Fully approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as a total facelifting and body slimming solution. A division of Australia’s Department of Health, the TGA is the regulatory body for therapeutic goods in the country. FDA and CE approval are not relevant in Australia. | Most conventional HIFU treatments are not TGA-approved. |
Differences between HIFU and Radiofrequency treatments
HIFU | RF |
HIFU uses ultrasound technology and the body’s own natural healing process to tighten and tone skin on your face and body. It stimulates the growth of collagen without harming the outer layer of skin, resulting in long-lasting firming and tightening of the skin after just one treatment. HIFU delivers a more precise and more intense fractional ultrasound energy.
|
RF skin tightening relies on devices that use radiofrequency energy to reduce the appearance of fine lines and sagging skin by heating the skin’s deeper layers to stimulate collagen and elastin production. RF is based on a bulk heating strategy.
|
HIFU goes much deeper into and beyond the dermis, being able to reach the SMAS layer. | RF focuses on epidermal layers and does not go beyond the deep dermis. |
HIFU is generally performed as a single treatment.

FAQs
How long will a HIFU treatment take?
A full face treatment and neck takes 2 hours and a partial face or eye lift treatment can take around 30 minutes. Body treatments will sit somewhere within that range.
How long do the effects of HIFU last?
Scientific studies and clinical trials have shown that skin and tissue tightening continues for up to three months after a HIFU treatment. Subsequent remodelling, re-orientation of collagen bundles, and the formation of new collagen are also achieved over months after treatment.
How long till I see results?
- Immediate Effects: Some individuals may experience immediate tightening and lifting of the skin following a HiFu treatment session. However, these immediate effects are often temporary and may be more noticeable immediately after the treatment but fade over the next few days.
- Early Results (Weeks 1-4): In the weeks following the treatment, many patients start to notice subtle improvements in their skin texture and tone. Some may experience a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a slight tightening of the skin. However, these changes are usually gradual and may continue to improve over time.
- Progressive Improvement (Months 2-3): By the second to third month after treatment, patients typically see more significant improvements in their skin’s appearance. Collagen production continues to increase, leading to further skin tightening, smoother texture, and reduced wrinkles. Many patients report that their skin looks more youthful and radiant than before the treatment.
- Optimal Results (Months 3-6): The full benefits of HiFu skin treatments are usually seen within three to six months after the final treatment session. At this point, collagen remodeling is well underway, and the skin continues to improve in firmness, elasticity, and overall quality. Patients may notice a significant reduction in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin, with results lasting for up to a year or longer.
- Maintenance and Follow-Up: To maintain the results of HiFu skin treatments, patients may opt for periodic maintenance sessions every 12 to 18 months, depending on their individual needs and preferences. Additionally, practicing good skincare habits, including sun protection and moisturization, can help prolong the results of HiFu treatments.
What depths does it target?
It can also target different depths – 4.5mm, 3mm, 2mm and 1.5mm – to produce a more tailored effect according to your needs.
How long will I need to recover?
After your treatment, you can resume your normal activities immediately and there are no special measures that you have to take.
Is HiFU painful?
HiFu can be painful. The pain varies depending on each persons pain threshold. Our technicians are trained to provide you with the best possible results and comfort.
It’s important to note that individual results may vary, and some patients may experience more pronounced improvements than others. Consulting with a qualified skincare professional or dermatologist can provide personalized recommendations and expectations based on your unique skin type and concerns. Additionally, following post-treatment care instructions and adhering to any recommended skincare regimens can optimize the results of HiFu skin treatments.
